A Corner Was Brightened

This clunky door
stood all broken down and sad
quite uncomely and dejected
against a weary fence
as I drove by one day
a long while back.

Pass it by
I could not
for hidden beauty was seen
by this silly girl.

that his girl,
 with side-of-the-road treasures in hand
arrives home
as happy as if she had been treated
to the greatest of shopping sprees.

Loading this rather weighty find so lovely
into the car by myself
was quite a feat,
But maneuver it into the car,
this girl did.

Since that day long ago,
it has been waiting in the corner,
or rather glaring at me,
demanding some inspiration
other than the random draping of this thing or that.

A few days back
this girl decided to make something
and of course, make it now
when preparing dinner for delightful friends
was the more appropriate use of this girl's time.

Being in such a hurry,
the room,
no, the house,
was quite strewn
with scraps of all possible goodnesses.
of yarn, fabrics, laces and more...
A few hours and a big mess later,
voila!
a curtain-ish lovely brightens the corner.

But a meal for dear friends
must be made.
The table set.
Our hearts prepared.

So set aside this curtainly creation I did.
Being the imperfectionist that I am,
tape and thumbtacks hide behind said door
where none can see.
So, indeed, someday I will return,
new lovely.
This girl will in time add
a goodly amount of stitches and adornment
to our newly brightened corner.

This messy mess I could bear no longer
though I quite think
this photo makes it seem so lovely.

In truth it was not so lovely.
Being the first thing to be seen
upon entry to our homey home
today it greeted fair guests no more.

Gathering another canvas from Our Dear One and Her Love's wedding,
(only three more lovelies awaiting their fate remain)
some cotton batting,
an ample piece of vintagy wool blanket

 one rather handy staple gun,

and a few minutes stolen
from time that really should be spent
reading and preparing
for a logic and literature class
that a handful of homeschoolers
await for me to teach
on the day next,

And voila!

Surely Now I can think
heady thoughts
of symbolism and plots,
for one little eensy piece
of my homey home

has a little touch of order
mingled with beauty,
happy reminders of days past,
and friends so dear.

Now off to the smarty books I go...

Another Curtain Up-Do

Company was coming.
Food needed to be made.
Lots of it.
The house needed to be put in some resemblence of order.
But wait. I want a new bathroom curtain. I want it now.
No time to shop.
Hmmm.
An old curtain panel in the cupboard...scraps of happy fabric calling me...

30 minutes later, I had the panel hemmed to the right length and nicely accented with fabrics that don't really match, and I was back to preparing the house for what turned out to be a great weekend whirlwind of family memories. You can see my other curtain up-do here.

Curtain Up-do

I tried shopping for new curtains. I really did, only to end up at the thrift store. I purchased a set of heavy cotton panels for $7, instead of $20 for one rather ugly panel at a department store. After cutting one of the panels to the right length and hemming it, I perused my stash finding a favorite orange print and grey kona to give it some pop. I really would not have thought of putting orange and grey together, but since I usually have time to sew at night when fabric stores are closed, one must make due. A little cutting of strips, a little ironing, a smidge of sewing and voila. New curtains. And new favorite colors. Orange and grey.
