This is our new read-aloud. I love it. Can't wait each day for our time of reading it for several reasons. Just look at it. It's beautiful. The inside is full of amazing pictures. And it is a well-written classic - with a plot and fully developed characters and complex yet readable language. I am probably even more excited about this book because we just finished reading nonsensical Alice in Wonderland. I hated it. Really hated it. I know that is a strong word, but 'disliked' doesn't fully express my opinion. Has anyone noticed how long it was on my booklist? Forever. Because I hated reading it. It's only redeeming factor was the illustrator, which is probably the only reason I bought the book in the first place when my oldest two were the young listeners. I've also discovered that I don't like reading a book aloud twice. The only exception is Charlotte's Web which I could read to the young again and again. It is such a precious read that I never tire of. Which good book are you enjoying right now?

I love all those Scribner Classics and own every one with the illustrations by N C Wyeth. Reading The Great Divorce by Lewis again and Tellers of Tales by Roger Lancelyn Green. 100 Cupboards Trilogy by Nate are great read aloud books (if I say so myself!)
ReplyDeleteThis one is illustrated by Louis Rhead with over 100 illustrations. Wyeth's are lovely, indeed.
ReplyDeleteI'm listening to Mr. Poppers Penguins in the car with Baby. Does that count? :)
ReplyDeleteI read Mr. Poppers Penguins to both sets. Definately a good read-aloud. Up there with Charlotte's Web!
